A year in review: IJAM's 2011 reflections

A picture is worth a thousand words.
2011 was a busy year for all of us here at IJAM. The picture above captures our work and inspiration to continue fighting for what we believe. This photo is of a mother, friend, and community member, shortly after her release from ICE detention. Although one cannot clearly see, she is holding her month old baby Luna, whom she was unable to see for more than 20 days.
I have been advocating for immigrant rights for some time, being undocumented myself, I've been able to work with many individuals who have gone through the detention process, however, this story and the journey it led us on,is something I will never forget and a memory I will treasure forever.
Unfortunately, and fortunately at the same time, this is only a tidbit of what happened in 2011. IJAM was able to accompany not only Edith, but many other individuals who have been caught up in our broken immigration system. We have been able to conduct "Know Your Rights" trainings in various parts of Kansas and Missouri, host organizing trainings for community members in St. Joseph, participate in weekly radio shows informing the community of their rights, and much much more.
I've had the pleasure of being named IJAM Board President for this year and not only am I humbled and blessed, but also excited for this new journey for me and for IJAM. I invite you to join us in our work for a just and fair immigration system. We've updated our calendar of events and we will continue to update our website so that you're always informed of our work and ways to get involved.
In solidarity,
Myrna Orozco
